It is with deep sympathy that I inform you of the death of John E. Shay, Ph.D., the sixth President of Marygrove College. Dr. Shay passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon, surrounded by his loving family. He served us well throughout some very difficult years for the College, from 1980 to 1997. “Jack” was a steadfast leader, known for his disarming humor and quick wit, which he used to skillfully bridge gaps in a way that only he could. He enjoyed the challenge of a good argument, and is credited with working diligently alongside the Board of Trustees to ensure that Marygrove would continue to independently serve the people of Detroit, of all races and creeds, as a Catholic institution of higher learning guided by spiritual and human values.

To acknowledge his 17 years of exemplary service and loyalty to our beloved institution, I encourage you attend his funeral mass here at Sacred Heart Chapel on Thursday morning. We wish his wonderful wife, Patricia and their three children Maria, David and John, and their families, all of our love and prayers in this difficult time.

You may pay your respects to Dr. Shay and his family at Desmond Funeral Home at 32515 Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak:

10:30 a.m. – Noon
59 Alfred Street, Detroit MI 48201

Art House (originally the Elisha Taylor home) is a Gothic Revival home completed in 1872. It is located in the historic Brush Park neighborhood just north of downtown Detroit. Its original interiors have been preserved, and since 1981 it has served as a center for art and architectural study.

Professor Michael Farrell leads a tour of the public rooms which preserve original fireplaces, mirrors, woodwork, decorative plaster, stenciling, Minton floor tiles, parquet floors and etched glass. Three floors (not elevator accessible) are filled with period furnishings, and artworks and artifacts spanning 2000 years. Art House is truly one of Detroit’s hidden gems.

The 1 ½ hour tour is done in groups of 20 for the reasonable cost of $20/person. There is also a gift shop to explore (cash and checks only). Parking is on the street. For those who are interested, following the tour we plan to have lunch at the Traffic Jam Restaurant at Second and Canfield, a short distance away, which has secure parking, and a varied menu.

To make reservations, send a check (payable to Marygrove College) no later than April 26, 2013 to Marygrove College, Attn: Diane Puhl, 8425 W. McNichols , Detroit MI 48221.

If you have questions, please contact Elaine Sullivan ’69 at (248) 549-4464 or evsullivan26@yahoo.com or Lillie Smith Foster ’99 at (313) 898-6802 or lilliefoster@ameritech.net.

For more than 35 years, Gleaners Community Food Bank has been “nourishing communities by feeding hungry people.” Last year, Gleaners distributed 45 million pounds of emergency food to over 600 partner soup kitchens, shelters and pantries in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Livingston and Monroe counties. Gleaners alleviates hunger by providing the equivalent of 97,344 meals per day to people who otherwise cannot afford the food they need.

The Marygrove College Alumni Association will participate in a community service project with Gleaners Community Food Bank at 2131 Beaufait, Detroit, MI 48207.

Ballroom dancing is making a comeback and here is your chance to learn this elegant and graceful art form. The Marygrove College Alumni Program Committee is once again offering eight, 1½ hour lessons followed by a dance where you can show off your newly acquired or finely honed skills.

Reuben Collier and Margo Lee ’00, both experienced instructors who love to dance, will guide you through the lessons and have you dancing like Fred or Ginger in no time. In addition to being fun, ballroom dancing is also very healthy, as it has physical, mental and social benefits. You can register on your own or with a partner. Leather bottom shoes are required.

Lessons, which are $5 for alumni and $3 for students with ID, will be held in Alumnae Hall in Madame Cadillac Hall from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. the following Thursdays: February 28, March 7, 14, 21, and April 4, 11, 18, 25, 2013 .

The dance will be held in Alumnae Hall on Friday, April 26, 2013. Tickets are $15 and should be purchased in advanced.

Proceeds will benefit the Jan Soleau, IHM Memorial Scholarship Fund. To register for the lessons, purchase tickets for the dance or for more information, contact Margo Lee ’00 at (313) 402-7776 or margolee2000@yahoo.com or Diane Puhl at (313) 927-1443 or dpuhl@marygrove.edu. Let’s show those “Dancing With The Stars” celebrities they have nothing on Marygrove Alumni!

National Book Award winning poet Terrance Hayes will be the twenty-fifth guest in Marygrove’s Contemporary American Authors Series. He will deliver the Lillian and Don Bauder Lecture at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 19, 2013.

Along with the National Book Award, Hayes has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation, the Kate Tufts Discovery Award, and a Pushcart Prize, among other recognitions.

His credentials and body of work are remarkable. Hayes’s most recent collection, Lighthead (2010) earned him the National Book Award for Poetry. Wind in a Box (2006) examines the questions of race through a variety of voices and styles. Hip Logic (2002) won the National Poetry Series Open Competition. The poems of Muscular Music (1999) interweave the ideas of music and cultural identities. Hayes has also contributed to several anthologies, magazines, and journals, including The New Yorker, Ploughshares, and African American Review. Hayes has also been the recipient of the Red Brick Review Award, Whiting Writers Award (1999); and National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (2010). According to the National Book Foundation, “His poems braid dream and reality into a poetry that is both dark and buoyant.”

Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Hayes received his B.A. in visual arts from Coker College (1994) and his M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of Pittsburgh (1997). Known as both a poet and a painter, Hayes explores what it means to be a black male artist through a variety of cultural, historical, and personal discourses. Hayes has taught at Xavier University of New Orleans and is now Professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh where he currently resides.
